Horn-eyed Ghost Crab

Ocypode ceratophthalma

Description:

This crab;s horny stalks on top of its eyes develop and lengthen with age; dark maroon on lower surfaces of shell and legs; white large claw, and often an ‘H’ marking on lower back. Can exceed 40 mm across.

Habitat:

Mostly found on open beach below frontal dunes, intertidal zone. Most active at night; fleet-footed scavengers and predators. Found in Northern Australia from Shark Bay, WA, to northern NSW; South Africa to Hawaii and Japan.
