Great Scented Liverwort

Conocephalum conicum

Description:

The liverworts are so called because certain large thallose kinds were formally thought to resemble the lobes of the human liver. The large dark-green liverwort is best known by the following characteristics: the moist upper surface has a very clear network of cells with pores that are visable to the unaided eye and slightly raised above the surface; if brused, the plant gives off a very pleasant odour.

Habitat:

The conical fruiting bodies are produced in early spring. They are green at first and later become purple. They grow on wet rocks.

Notes:

Green. On the foot of a hardwood tree. Snow on top.
