Green Bottle Fly

Lucilla sericata

Description:

A really beautiful fly that is not quite so lovely in habit. These are commonly found on feces, carrion and garbage, where they lay their eggs for larval development. And because of this behavior, they have been used occasionally by physicians to treat patients with severe necrotic wounds. Larvae of this species are placed in the wound, wrapped up and allowed to eat the dead tissue and bacteria, often saving lives. Family Calliphoridae.

Habitat:

Came to an ultraviolet light in the garden, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.
