Velvet-top Fungus

Phaeolus schweinitzii

Description:

Fruiting body had one large lobe arising from a single stem that emerged from the ground. The cap was 4-5 inches in size, fan-shaped, rough and velvety in texture, and had a variety of brown coloration. Yellowish olive pores bruised easily when marked.

Habitat:

Growing on the ground on the edge of a swamp in an area with lots of pine.

Notes:

This fungus causes butt rot on conifers. It attacks the trees through their roots and produces decay in the root system and then in the heartwood of the lower part of the tree. This results in a weak, and sometimes hollow, tree base.
