Red breasted sapsucker

Sphyrapicus ruber

Description:

Sapsuckers drum on hollow trees to indicate territory, where they feed on the sap of trees obtained by drilling even rows of holes in the bark. This one has discovered that telephone poles with metal hardware make the best drums

Habitat:

home surrounded by forest

Notes:

After years of having them fly away whenever I went out, this pair has decided I mean them no harm and will drum happily while I take shot after shot

Yes! They are quite shy and rarely seen for any length of time. That this pair uses our electric pole for their antics and have accepted me is wonderful

Thank you, Jim! Not everyone has an electric pole in their backyard, but at least ours in not a 100% eyesore!
