Red Back Salamander

Description:

Red Back Salamanders stay under 4 inches. They come in different natural color phases the lead back(lacking the back stripe), and the red phase which is basically all red. The back stripe can range from red, brown, yellow, and orange. These small salamanders only lay up to 20 eggs in moist logs. Unlike most salamanders the young stay in the egg till fully developed

Habitat:

Moist wood areas.

I have found several red back and zigzag salamanders under the same logs and using the same burrows. Very cool
