Kiowa Grasshopper

Trachyrhachys kiowa

Description:

Medium-sized grasshopper, highly variable in color and pattern as shown by these two specimens. Note blue hind tibiae ("shins"). Hind wing cloudy, varying to yellowish, visible when the insect flies.

Habitat:

Vast open field with sandy soil, very short grasses, scattered sunflower, yucca, prickly-pear cacti, and elm trees.
