Banded Mongoose

Mungos mungo

Description:

Small insectivorous carnivorid living in troops; often mistaken for the more well known Surricate/Meerkat at first glance by the new safari-goer. At most 2 foot tall when standing on hind legs, with distinct black rings on the back and a ruddy face.

Habitat:

Virtually any open ground in southern Africa, enjoying the long grass. They also frequent short grass (and lawns) around camp sites with apparently little fear of human contact.

Notes:

These mongoose chased away a Martial Eagle while we observed them!
