Ruby-throated Hummingbird, male

Archilochus colubris

Description:

Iridescent green back, and male has forked tail and fiery red throat. This is the only widespread species in the East (USA).

Habitat:

Flowers, gardens, wood edges, over streams, edges of bogs.

Notes:

I have been gardening for butterflies and hummingbirds for many years now and with the addition of a dozen feeders or so, I get some 40-50 Ruby-throated hummingbirds in my garden every summer. They put on quite a show. I sit out and watch for hours. This male is enjoying Torch Lily in my garden.
