Giant Anteater

Description:

Giant Anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla), juvenile, Sucsari Creek, Rio Napo Rainforest, Amazon River, Amazonia, Peru.

Notes:

This is a fascinating animal: No teeth (!!), one of the lowest body temperature of about 32° C, gastric acid is not hydrochloride acid, but formic acid (from the ants as it's main prey).

Yes it is fascinating! These creatures are truly giant - about the size of a very large golden retriever but not nearly as friendly. It takes one heck of a lot of ants to sustain something this big! One look at the front claws and you know they can do some serious damage - not only to ants nests but also to a human.
