Eight-spotted Forester

Alypia octomaculata

Description:

Velvety black FW is accented with metalic-blue scales. Two large cream-colored spots mark central median area. Black HW has two large white patches, the outer of which may be reduced in size. Black thorax has pale yellow tegulae. Legs are adorned with showy orange tufts (I call them leg-warmers) Hosts: Ampelopsis, grape, and Virginia creeper

Habitat:

Woodland

Notes:

I was cooking at my stove one day and noticed this moth on the screen of my kitchen window. When I went outside and offered my finger, it stepped right on ! I love the bright red legwarmers.
