I found a couple of records about the species on south america:
French Guiana: http://www.galerie-insecte.org/galerie/r...
Colombia: http://www.siac.net.co/biota/bitstream/1... (this is a record of known species in Micrathena genus in Colombia)
I didn't find a reference to the species in Ecuador but (according to the map) you found this very close to the border with Colombia, so it might be a possible match.

I also found on Wikipedia that they're distributed from Mexico to Brasil, but i don't usually trust their sources, and i didn't found anything about it anywhere else.

Thanks Ignacio! This looks like a match but I can't find a record of the species in South America.

Cool spotting, take a look at Micrathena sexpinosa, this one looks very similar to it, but i don't know if it can be found on Ecuador
