Rhinoceros Hornbill

Buceros rhinoceros

Description:

Earned this name because of Appendix characteristic of its beak. The uses of this "horn" are not well understood, but it is thought that they have a role in attracting mates or to amplify their calls. The rhinoceros hornbills-feed on fruits found in the treetops, typically live in pairs and males are known to "imprison" females inside a hollow tree, leaving only a small hole through which to feed the baby birds.

Habitat:

Borneo, Java, Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula. Rainy jungles and forests, both lowland, like mountain.

Notes:

This specimen from the "Parque Zoológico de São Paulo"
