Norape sp
This moth is about 1.5 inches long. I spotted it at night next to a street lamp.
Tropical dry forest in NW Costa Rica 4 months into the 6 month rainy season.
How awesome! Let me know what the biologists say! I'll take a look... ;-)
Thanks J! What cool information. I am going to send this link off to the head of biology at the University of Costa Rica. He will get a kick out of this one. He just might have a bit more info as well. Great detective work. You might have fun with this one: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/755...
Nice spotting Larry! This one has a cream colored head and "pompom" in the middle of its "back." This has not yet been specified as a species in Costa Rica, but has several specimens on BOLD Systems under Norape Janzen02, and is under research to find out whether it is a new species, or a variable relative of a previously documented species. It may end up being a variation of Norape virgo, which now is thought to only be north of you, but maybe it has a more southern distribution than we think.

Thanks Kitt for the suggestion. I did some checking and they sure look similar but I am not convinced just yet.
