Pirarara

Phractocephalus hemioliopterus

Description:

It is omnivorous, eating almost everything at the bottom of rivers, among other fish, fruits and shellfish. The Pirarara along with the Ocelote and Alligator are the greatest, if not, the only predators of Piranha fish in Mato Grosso's Pantanal.

Habitat:

Bowls Amazon and Araguaia-Tocantins. Occurs in the channel of rivers, in the pits after the rapids, floodplains and flooded forest, including the tributaries of black and clear waters, reaching the headwaters and part of estuary.

This specimen is of "Aquário de Poços" ("Poços' Aquarium")
