Spider wasp (female)

Description:

Small to medium-sized, all-black wasp typical of many pompilids. Extra-long tarsal spines on front "feet" help identify the genus.

Habitat:

This female was excavating a burrow in sandy soil near the top of a ridge, elevation ~3,000 ft. Wind-stunted trees and shrubs typical of chaparral habitat.

Notes:

Many species of Episyron also have white markings.
