Bubo scandiacus
This is one of the largest species of Owl with a wingspan of 49–59 in and on average it is the heaviest Owl in North America weighing 3.5 to 6.6 lb.
It breeds in the Artic Tundra and winters south through Canada
I had another driving trip through the prairies east of Calgary. In total I saw 5 Snowy Owls during my 5 hour drive. They were certainly more numerous than during my previous prairie trips last month. When I took the picture of the Owl sitting on the pole it was -16 celcius. You can see ice pellets on the eyelid of cropped head and shoulders photograph.
