A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
The moss covered base of a huge tree with hundreds of tubular, aerial roots. The tree probably exceeded three feet in diameter.
Tropical rainforest of the Hamakua district.
The aerial roots are positively gravitropic (growing toward the ground) and possibly pneumatophores. This might be a mangrove.

Darn, NatralList, I thought it'd help to narrow things down a bit. Maybe this is an oversized palm species?
I now regret not photographing the rest of the tree, haha!
Updated notes and location.
Indeed, Nick! The plants, especially the trees, in Hawaii were all fantastic natural examples.
S Frazier, I'm sorry, but I was in quite a rush when I took these; I was getting eaten alive by mosquitoes. I just know that the tree was at least 20 feet tall.
Would you possibly have a photo of the upper part of the tree to add?
Wow... It's mindblowing what nature can do...
Yes, it was a nice sight to see. Thanks for appreciating it. :)
That is just incredibly cool looking! Thanks for sharing!!
