Large Mud-nesting Wasp

Abispa splendida

Description:

Very large wasp. Orange and black. Solitary daylight hunter

Habitat:

With a large range this predator checks crevices and every surface for spiders right throughout our garden. They are found in all sorts of habitats.

Notes:

It is difficult not to feel sorry for spiders when this wasp is seen. It is absolutely relentless in its hunting. This specimen came into an outside laundry while I was washing clothes. It impersonally checked every inch of my clothing and every tiny crevice in the building. How terrify would it be for a spider to see the silhouette of this against the sky! Because there was a policy of treating spiders with respect there were many Badumna webs through those buildings for the wasp to hunt and they were regular visitors in mid summer heat
