Tubaria sp. (blood-red agaric)

Tubaria sp. (possibly T. rufofulva)

Description:

Agaric mushroom cluster. Blood-red colour, and they did bleed too, all over my hands! Here's an image I found online - http://photos.rnr.id.au/2014/05/24/fungu... The reference links also provide photos. The caps in this spotting were damaged, possibly by birds which do dig around the leaf litter in this forest. Caps were soft and brittle, and appeared to be totally waterlogged (saturated). When squeezed, the blood-red liquid spurted out. Outer skin was red, but inner flesh was bloody-pink. Larger caps about 5 cms in diameter, and stipe about same length. No rings present. Loose gills.

Habitat:

Subtropical rainforest section of the Bare Rock Track, near Mt. Cordeaux in Main Range National Park. Very cool and damp area on top of the escarpment. Often misty and drizzling rain. Nestled between the buttress roots of a tree, amongst tree moss and various fern species. Moist soil and leaf litter.

Notes:

This national park is World Heritage listed, and forms part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia. http://www.environment.gov.au/heritage/p... PS: Many thanks to Leuba Ridgway for her comment. It headed me in the right direction.

Thank you, maplemoth662 and Sarah. The flash really highlighted the intense redness of the specimens, and it was just like blood. Needless to say, it stained like blood too. I had to scrub it off my hand and soak my cloths in nappy wash to remove the stains. My first encounter, and I've never seen anything like it since. I've also been back to this location but couldn't spot any.

Cool, indeed. And messy too. I had the "blood" all over my hands, and it stained badly. Must try and nail down the exact ID.

Cool!

Thanks, Leuba. I've had a look at a few Tubaria species, mostly as image searches, and I reckon you're spot-on. Will try now to locate the exact species.

Nice ! Check out Tubaria species but they are on dead wood I think.
