El nombre común en otros idiomas es: "Taglilie" (alemán), "hémérocalle" (francés) y "daylily" (inglés). En español, además de ser conocida como "lirio de día", también se la llama "lirio japonés", "lirio de la mañana" o, "lirio de San Juan", "azucena amarilla", "azucena turca" o, simplemente, "hemerocalis". El género Hemerocallis es originario de regiones templadas de Asia, particularmente de Japón, Siberia, Corea y China. Sus flores grandes y vistosas, las han hecho populares a lo largo de todo el mundo y, a través de su cultivo, varias de las especies del género se han diseminado e, incluso se han naturalizado, en muchos países de Europa y de América.
