White-tailed Deer

Odocoileus virginianus

Description:

A White-tailed buck dubbed Blondie

Habitat:

Prairie grasses surrounded by woods and farm fields

Notes:

Blondie is one of the last bucks in our herd still retaining his antlers. The first bucks I noticed had dropped were Daddy and OH, the first week of January. Five days later I noticed Leroy, Dennis, Tiny G. and JR (Junior) had shed theirs as well. This earlier-than-normal shed makes me wonder if the timing of their shedding is cold or weather related as, last winter most still held on to their antlers until the last week of February and some the first week of March after a very warm and mild winter. A wildlife friend of mine back in the Twin Cities told me that all his bucks were still in antlers as of January 13th however, we're 10-20 degrees colder up here on average from October through May. Just curious if anyone else has noticed anything similar in their shedding trends...?
