Moose

Description:

Distinguished by its overhanging snout, and the male by the huge broad antlers. Huge. Length to 10 feet. height at shoulder, to 7 1/2 feet. weight to 1400 lbs. Coat is blackish or brownish. Legs lighter. Antlers can spread to 6 feet. They drop the antlers and grow new ones each year. Bull has mane and also bell of skin and hair hanging from throat. Cow lacks antlers, mane and bell. Calves born mid May - early June.

Habitat:

Wilderness forests near shallow lakes.

Notes:

Vermont has lots of Moose, especially plentiful in the Northeast Kingdom near the Canada boarder. We love them. If you look close at the first picture you will see a young one one hiding in the reeds (on the right).
