Thanks for the compliment. :-) I use BugGuide quite a bit, actually, but haven't had time to utilize it as of late. I decided to upload a number of spottings here without getting them identified first. Until now, that's something I haven't really done. I have preferred to upload organisms that I had gotten identified first. :-) Now that winter is here and I have less time invested in the field, I will try to get some of these listed on BugGuide and see what we come up with. I'll definitely check out Efferia, though!
Hi Aaron, This is a beautiful image! I think this most resembles a female Robber Fly from Genus Efferia. From there I am not sure at this point. I think you will have to look at range and find out if there are any specific features you can compare to from your image and the other ones. If you have too much trouble on your own you could submit it on Bugguide for ID. Just make sure to have it well cropped so just the insect is the main part of the picture (not that you should need to crop much). I hope this helps!
