Coastal Brown Ant

Description:

Also known as Big-headed ant. Soldier is 4mm with a massive head and reddish hue. The workers are half the size of the soldiers

Habitat:

Noxious pest from Southern Africa that has become common in urban areas

Notes:

It is not the best image. It was surprise when this species turned up during identity research for PN. The image is bad enough so that it would not normally be included among spottings but the ant wasn't recognised back in 2009 when the spotting was made and it seems appropriate to have a record of the species in that location
