Thread-legged Bug

Stenolemus bituberus

Description:

Looking a little like a spider and a little like a mantis, this mottled brown and white bug was about 12mm long. It had long legs with curly filamentous setae. The first pair of legs were held folded and close to the front fo the head. Antennae were of moderate length. The body was held well above the ground.

Habitat:

garden

Notes:

I must have brushed past this bug by accident; I found him clinging to my leg with a string of spider silk still trailing from one of his legs. These little bugs are clever spider hunters. Thanks Maria. I believe these are common around here - this is the first one I've ever seen but could not get good shots.
