Black Mud-Nesting Wasp

Paralastor sp.

Notes:

My husband saw this in our pond today - unfortunately just the one angle! He says it was bigger than a paper wasp but smaller than a potter wasp. I am still not 100% sure of the ID but the closest match seems to be this one: http://www.brisbaneinsects.com/brisbane_...

I notice Peter at Brisbane Insects hasn't managed a definite ID on his either - he has Paralastor sp.

besides paralastor is a big genus so it's ok to say it's sp. ?

Not certain about variation it would be nice to see male & female - but I liked the yellow markings around the thorax.

I've had a REALLY good look at that one, Argy. It looks so close, but I wrote it off because of the leg colour, and the tail tip on ours is completely black. Is there room for colour variation in wasps?
