A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Tamias (Tamias) striatus)
I believe this to be an Eastern Chipmunk
In our backyard which butts up to wetlands, woodlands and grazing pasture and is within a seven mile radius of a lake, creek, river and prairie fields. This fellow liked to crawl in and out of our firewood (cut) logs and so is covered in spider's webs and leaf matter.
We feed birds heavily in our front and back yards. By putting out sunflower seeds, safflower and occasionally peanuts we attract other wildlife as well: Black, Red and Fox Squirrels, Chipmunks, Shrew, Stripped Gophers, Voles, Raccoons, etc... This inevitably leads to larger predators coming in for the smaller rodents and birds: Hawks, Bald Eagles, Mink, Skunk, Coyote and (twice seen) Cougars. We've even seen large scat that may have been from a Black Bear on both a 100-year-old fallen tree and on a wood dock we have leading out into our wetlands in back however the closest one has been 'reported" is on Otter Tail Lake a good 4-8 miles away. Wild Turkey and White-tailed Deer also frequently come into our yard and clean up the fallen bird seed on the ground.
