Raccoon

Procyon lotor

Description:

Animal bones: tail, back and hip, a few tufts of brown and dark beige fur.

Habitat:

Bones found around a small patch of trees, lots of sticks and twigs found covering the ground all around.

Notes:

Me and my friends found these bones of what we think may be raccoon bones. We assume that this may be is because we found these bones not long after I saw a raccoon get hit by a car almost only a week before (and unfortunately it being still alive); and as I included a picture of a tuft of brown and dark beige fur which looks like raccoon fur. What stumps me is that it decomposed the skin and the rest of the fur quite quickly if you ask me, like as I said before, it was only a week before when i had seen the raccoon was hit. Plus, we didn't find the skull which is strange. So why would only part of the body be there but not the rest? Unless of course an animal had come to eat that part of the body (which we assumed). Thanks for listening!

Please consider adding this spotting to the "Identifying Animals Through Osteology" Mission: http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8475... as well!

Hi baileykatz00. Interesting spotting!

It is likely that this is a different animal (possibly another raccoon or other mammal) that died earlier than the raccoon you saw get hit by the car. The remains of this animal are too far decomposed for it to only have been a few days.

If this area is common for animals to cross the road it would not be surprising to find another less fortunate critter in the same area.

You should move this to the "Mammals" section since, even though they are remains, it was a mammal of some sort. You could also include this in the Signs of Wildlife Mission if you wanted:
