Manatee

Notes:

These sweet creatures like to come to this one corner at the docks. What you can't see is that there is a grated (huge, sewer-sized) pipe that feeds fresh, cool water into the canal. A family/ community of about 8 manatees (including 3calves!) came over to take a sip. They use their front fins to hold onto the grate and keep them stationary as they slurp in the goodness! They take turns, usually two by two, and the calves generally go last. Once an adult has had their fill, they swim on down the canal. Notice in some pictures the scrapes and scars from boats :( We actually had to ask a family to get out of the water and stop swimming up to them. Of course, we would all like to make friends with these friendly giants, but it is against federal law. And for good reason! We don't need more manatees getting hurt coming up to boats or being fed things not in their natural diet. Take care and look on with love :)
