Heterodon platirhinos
Small juvenile snake, less then a foot long. These snakes have a upturned nose to burrow threw lose dirt and leaf litter for their favorite food. The Hognose primarily eat nothing but toads so a wooded area and grasslands with plenty of toads is a must for this species. They also come in many different color phase such as orange, and black. They also have rear fangs for popping the toad that inflate when being eaten. The hognose is mildly venomous but rare affect humans. If bitten the area usually just turns red and swell, the bit is not life threatening. This species is also know for playing dead. When playing dead it will turn over open it mouth gurgle some saliva and it musk to give a nasty smell.

Great find Nick, one of my favorite snakes! This should be removed from the Midwest Amphibian Study group since it is a reptile, but please consider adding it to the CSC Mission- Snakes of the United States. Thanks!
