Sharp-shinned hawk

Accipiter striatus

Description:

Young sharp-shinned hawk.

Habitat:

City of Eugene, local park with oak trees.

Notes:

These hawks hatched in a nearby tree. They played in the water when our neighbors watered their lawn. They struggled with flying at first, one crashed not 10 feet from us. It looked stunned, then hopped away and was able to fly far enough to get on a fence post. By mid-August we found at least one bird skeleton a week under the nest area. Many smaller bird feathers were also found right below the nest.
