Amblypsilopus triscuticatus

Amblypsilopus triscuticatus

Description:

Animal cruelty !? The tiles in our bathroom became the centre of attention for a tiny but very attractive fly... 10mm long, red eyes, green striated thorax, yellow and black gradually banded abdomen.

Habitat:

Suburban home.

Notes:

I hope it was just coincidence and the poor fly wasn't starving. Possibly a species of 'Long legged fly'? Yes! First record in Victoria on ALA... mostly seen near magroves in NSW !!? ID'd via Dr Ken Walker from Dr Dan Bickle, Australian Museum - thanks so much! Favourite.

Woohoo.. an ID ! Thanks via Dr Ken Walker to Dr Dan Bickle, Australian Museum. No wonder it was a hard one... no previous records from Victoria - mangroves and eucy forest in NSW and Queensland... must be on holidays. Thanks Jolly, Andrea - on track with Dolichopodidae.

Thanks Scott. I haven't had a really good go at this ID yet. The tile species is extinct.

Haha, I saw the thumbnail & immediately though this a prank cartoon spotting from a new user! As Ava say, nice presentation!
