Lakin Grasshopper

Melanoplus lakinus

Description:

Small, short-winged grasshopper. Occasionally, some populations will include individuals with long wings. Note bright blue hind tibiae ("shins"). Identification accomplished by examining male genitalia.

Habitat:

This specimen was spotted in a vast open field with sandy soil, various grasses, yucca, and scattered elm trees.
