Australian Water Dragon

Description:

This grey brown lizard ( ? female) was about 50 cms. It had a dark band stretching from each eye down to the front stopping just above the front legs. The skin was largely dark but broken by thin pale bands on the back ,tail and legs. Folds of skin seen on either side of head gave it a dragon-look.
The underside was pale.
Short spines were seen behind the neck going down the back.

Habitat:

Spotted sunning herself on a rock in a riparian area - Sydney harbour.
This is Australia's largest water dragon seen living along healthy waterways in Sydney.

Notes:

Water dragons are omnivores. They are completely insectivorous as juveniles but become omnivorous as they grow. These dragons have been seen consuming molluscs and crustaceans.
