Pill millipedes

Description:

A couple of Zephronidae Pill Millipedes rolled into balls to defend themselves from predators. These millipedes are about 3 cm in diameter when rolled. These detritivore scavenge the ground to recycle decaying plant matter and dried vegetation back into nutrients. Possibly a Castanotherium species

Habitat:

In an oil palm plantation inside the forest of Balung River Eco Resort, Tawau, Sabah.

Notes:

This species can be easily mistaken as a pillbug (Armadillidiidae) and misidentified as the European Glomeris connexa. Zephronidae millipedes are larger (more than 20mm), have 12 body segments (tergites) and endemic to Southeast Asia. >>>Map accuracy : 5km diameter.
