Ochlandrae reed frog

Raorchestes ochlandrae

Description:

The Ochlandrae reed frog is an endemic frog to Kakayam wildlife Sanctuary. It can be identified by the striking golden yellow marking on the pupil, Short rounded snout, Golden yellow body resembling the golden colored bamboo where it lives and arched head. The species was discovered in 2007

Habitat:

This frog is Endemic to the Northern regions in Kerala of the western ghats. To be specific, the only spotting are in Kakkayam Wildlife Sanctuary, in Calicut. The frog is rare and very rarely seen outside. This species was found inside a reed or hollow bamboo where it spends most of its life.Reeds with slight air gaps are usually preferred by the frogs.

Notes:

Lives inside the reed or hollow bamboo, Hence the name. Mating takes place inside the Reed. The frogs color is somewhat similar to the bamboo in the area. Habitat under threat due to construction of check dams. Can be noticed by the calls.
