Vespula pensylvanica
Ground-nesting species, mostly yellow. Easily the most common urban yellowjacket species in western North America.
Nest entrance in a trail on a north-facing slope near an artificial lake. Mostly grasses, weeds, elm trees, some ornamental pine trees.
The workers are expanding the nest cavity, removing mouthfuls of soil particles and depositing them just outside the nest entrance. They are easily approached without aggravating them.
