Description:

Hairy pillbox crab (Halicarcinus whitei), spotted at Petone beach, Lower Hutt, NZ. The crab is very similar in apearance and size, with another Halicarcinus varius crab species (H. varius) , found alive at Houghton bay, Wellington NZ. Both species (apart from the color/environment difference) are of round shape, with short proboscis, and small round protruding eyes at the base of their proboscis. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/147...
