Hairy pillbox crab

Halicarcinus whitei


Hairy pillbox crab (Halicarcinus whitei), spotted at Petone beach, Lower Hutt, NZ. The crab is very similar in apearance and size, with another Halicarcinus varius crab species (H. varius) , found alive at Houghton bay, Wellington NZ. Both species (apart from the color/environment difference) are of round shape, with short proboscis, and small round protruding eyes at the base of their proboscis.
