Firecrown hummingbird

Description:

Superior taxa: Trochilidae / Apodiformes
Picaflor chico, pingarita, picaflor rubí, Picaflor de cabeza granate
Largo: 11 cms.
Macho: Cabeza verde con corona roja anaranjada brillante. Garganta verde con manchitas bronceadas brillantes. Por encima verde con brillo bronceado. Por debajo verde grisáceo. Flancos y cola verdes bronceados. Pico recto negro.
Hembra: Algo más pequeña que el macho; y con la corona sin el brillo rojo, siendo del mismo tono que el dorso.
The Green-backed Firecrown or Chilean firecrown
11cm in length, green back, only the male shows a bright iridescent red-orange crown.
Like its cousin the Juan Fernández Firecrown, the Green-back often hangs from flower petals or leaves with its feet. Their nests are built in high branches or bushes. They like to eat insects, inch worms, and nectar from flowers.

Habitat:

Bosques, quebradas aguadas, jardines; y en general, lugares floridos.
Distribución: Atacama a Tierra del Fuego; y en la isla Robinson Crusoe del archipiélago de Juan Fernández.

Found in Argentina and Chile. It can be fairly common in some locations, especially on Robinson Crusoe Island, 350 miles off the Chilean coast. It is found as far south as Tierra del Fuego.

Notes:

We found this fellow trapped in our living room after lunch. He felt even smaller than he looks, so tiny an yet so capable to get peoples attention. He was pretty nervous and couldn't get better shots at him.
