Xylocopa violacea
A large and impressive bee, rather big insect belonging to the family Xylocopinae . Twice as large as honey bee, with massive body. Body all black, with wings with violet sheen. Heavy buzzing sound when passing by.
Seen in an open area rich in wild flowers (our garden, not in use). They've been feeding these last two days on Common Hollyhock, not touching anything else. Nests in dead wood (which we have plenty in the garden).
Common and widespread in the Mediterranean region
