Blue Dasher

Pachydiplax longipennis

Description:

This is a male Blue dasher. He was approximately 1 1/2 inches in length with beautiful blue coloring. He has a yellow striped thorax and iridescent green eyes.

Habitat:

I spotted this guy in a botanical garden in Austin, Texas last summer. This dragonfly inhabits areas where there is still or slow moving water such as ponds and marshes, or any area where water has gathered such as in low lying areas after a rain. Adult Blue dasher's roost in trees overnight.

Notes:

Dragonflies are one of my favorites! FUN FACTS: 1. Diet: Blue dasher's are carnivorous and can consume up to 10% of their own body weight daily! 2. The Blue dasher's compound eyes contain 30,000 ommatidia (light sensing organs). Ref:https://owlcation.com/stem/All-About-Dragonflies-Dragonfly-Symbolism
