Queen of Spain Fritillary; Sofia

Issoria lathonia

Description:

The Queen of Spain Fritillary has very distinctive large silver spots on the underside hindwings, see pic 2, so this butterfly is unlikely to be confused with any other species (https://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/77......). In the case you cannot get a pic of the underside, , the rather square wing shape is also unlike any other. Both sexes are very similar in appearance, although the female is slightly larger, with a shorter abdomen and a more greenish hue around the base of the upperside wings.

Habitat:

Open oak forest. Reserva de la Biosfera del Real Sitio de San Ildefonso-El Espinar.

Notes:

Camera Model: NIKON D500. Exposure Time: 1/800 sec.; f/11; ISO Speed Rating: 640. Exposure Bias: 0 EV. Focal Length: 300.0 mm. No flash fired. DSC_4500
