Description:

All-black wasp easily mistaken for a spider wasp (family Pompilidae).

Habitat:

Found resting on sandy soil along a trail at the edge of a heavily wooded area.

Notes:

Females are solitary and hunt crickets as food for their larval offspring. Identification to genus somewhat tentative, much easier with a specimen in hand.
