Pica hudsonia
The black-billed magpie is a large black and white bird with a very long tail and white belly. Size about 20 inches (50 cm). Large black bill and legs. Female same as male. Very intelligent bird--can mimic dogs, cats and even people. Mates with same mate for several years and they both build a nest together. Nest is a huge structure, a big globular canopy of sticks about 3' in diameter, with entrance holes on either side.
This bird is a non-migrator in western North America. This black-billed magpie was spotted in Rapid City South Dakota.
