A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Tipulidae spp.
Craneflies look a lot like giant mosquitoes, but are not in the same species. They do not bite and adults are not known to feed on anything at all. Adults like to hang on screens, gutters, fabric, etc. and are attracted to light. Their long legs are very delicate and break easily. This specimen hovered around a fabric tarp for a few minutes before landing and becoming stationary. Wings are folded to the body and legs are folded upwards and towards the front.
Photographed in central Georgia.
