Description:

I spotted this spotted towhee during my visit through South Dakota. Had never seen one before. This bird resembles the eastern towhee. The spotted towhee has white tips on median, greater coverts forming 2 white wing bars, variable white spotting on back and scapulars, lack of rectangular white patch at primary bases. Has red eyes.

Habitat:

Thickets or shrubby areas across western North America. This spotted towhee was sitting on top of a pine tree near a campground in the badlands of South Dakota.
