Knowing a bit more information about your spottings would aid greatly in getting them identified.

The two most helpful are:
a) size- compare it to something everyone knows... like a thumb, a ruler, a coin, etc.
b) habitat (like your flower- an iris)-- what kind of area was it found in? dry soil? wet soil? forest? meadow? sand dune?
