Giant Leopard Moth

Hypercompe scribonia

Description:

The moth was white with black circles, very striking in coloration. He was just resting on the wood. He stayed there and did not fly. With wings folded he appeared to be about 2 inches long. Usually found in southern and eastern states .

Habitat:

I spotted this beautiful moth on the side of the garage as I was exiting the door. We live in west central rural Wisconsin. I have never seen this species here before. This was noon and I understand they are nocturnal.

Notes:

I was so glad I had my camera nearby...to record his beauty.I wonder if anyone else has seen them this far north and west?
