The Barred Owl is a large typical owl native to North America. It goes by many other names, including Eight Hooter, Rain Owl, Wood Owl, and Striped Owl, but is probably best known as the Hoot Owl based on its call.
Usually wooded area. However, some have been noted in suburban neighborhoods. We found this one along Mahoning Creek, outside Dayton, PA.
Similar to the Spotted Owl. Most obvious difference is the barred chest pattern vs. the spotted chest. Listen to the video of the Barred Owl's call. Knowing bird calls is always important in bird identification but even more helpful when attempting to locate elusive birds like owls. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fppKGJD3Y...
